“You’re a Grand Old Flag” was written by George Cohan in 1906 for his musical George Washington, Jr. The lyrics came from an encounter with a Civil War veteran who referred to Old Glory as, “A grand old rag.” Cohan switched the words, calling his song “You’re a Grand Old Flag.”

In the early 20th century, popularity depended largely on sheet music sales. “You’re a Grand Old Flag” was the first song from a musical to sell over a million copies. That’s a lot of notes!

Patriotic songs like this one helped shape America’s cultural identity. Think of a million music students practicing the SAME SONG in their homes. This is why the Prodigies team is so proud of what we do, because we delight in knowing we we can all share in the same musical experience. (Source)
